We had several adventures today! To start out the day, we decided to visit la Ferme aux Crocodiles on our way out of Pierrelatte - that's a crocodile farm featuring 350 female crocs and 35 males! We got to walk along on bridges and watch the sleepy crocodiles in the water and on the rocks. It was a pretty fun side trip.
The second adventure of the day was Christian's ride in an ambulance! He hit a bump and basically reopened all his old wounds and then some. A restaurant owner called an ambulance for him, and shortly after that, a car of police men showed up as well! The only bad part for Christian was that he had to take about a two hour break from unicycling to go to the hospital, but he quickly caught up with the group later. "The first one was kind of bad, this one was worse, the next one will kill me," he said. Let's hope he's kidding!
A final highlight for today was seeing Pont du Gard, a Roman acqueduct. Much of the group hooked up there and spent several hours taking pictures and swimming in the river to cool off! Then they rode the last 20 km uphill into the wind on a busy road, bringing the day's total to about 88.
What's your favorite part of the trip so far? I have a lot of funny moments that stand out in my mind - getting lost every other day and laughing about it, mooing at the cows, chasing a high speed biker who said she'd take me to her house to use her bathroom, eating an ice cream bar while riding and getting it all over my face, hands and gloves, seeing the acqueduct, laughing at John's stories, riding along all the off-road paths trying not to wipe out, talking to local people in their language, getting interviewed in French by a reporter, eating pear chocolate chip yogurt, and trying to remember the lyrics to "Leader of the Pack" so we can sing it while we ride.
What hurts you most? Every day I find new sore muscles. Today it was the muscle in front of my ankle on my left foot. My calves have also been sore from climbing hills.
Which language do you feel you're learning most in? All of them! I'm actually impressed with how much I can understand, and I like the chance to speak and hear all the languages I'm studying. German and French are really interesting, and of course I can't wait to get to Spain.
What is your favorite aspect of riding? I like the quirky adventures I always seem to end up in, and also how nice the people are here. We have been invited into so many people's homes to get water or use the bathroom.
And least favorite? Cars that drive really fast and come too close for comfort.
When you're riding alone, what do you think about? My mind just wanders - a lot of times I try to comprehend how cool it is that I'm unicycling through France. Sometimes I have a song stuck in my head, or I compose a mental journal or letter.
