Since some of us require more sleep than others, it was threatening to rain when the first riders left and the drops had already begun to fall when the others took off. The first 30 k was rough -- cold rain, strong wind. At this point the unicyclists had reached Macom and decisions were made. Andy, Scot, and Chris decided to take a train to Lyon. Christian, Aaron, and John kept on treking. Tammy, Tanya, Elijah, and Javier stopped for breakfast and lunch at McDonalds and bought a map at a gas station, then purchased rain gear at a store and continued. John's friends from England were visiting today, driving a "second support vehicle" and riding a bike. Meanwhile, the train folk had a rough encounter when Chris's CamelBak was stolen ... passport, money, and all.
Eventually the rain slowed and stopped, leaving a cool atmosphere for riding in. We didn't even get lost, and we made it to Lyon before dark. Lyon is the second biggest city in France. Luckily we'll have more time to check it out tomorrow!
Aaron Svec is always easy to spot on his uni, as he rides in his newly acquired cowboy hat given to him by his sister. "It works for providing shade and keeping sweat out of my eyes," he said. Whenever anyone asks where his is from, he responds "Texas" - even though he is really a South Dakotan. He started unicycling two years ago with inspiration from Tammy and Tanya. "It seems like just yesterday."
What is your best wipe out so far? I've only had one wipe out. I was riding along happily at 20 kph just about to leave Chalon, and I looked down at my apple and the rest of the world moved around the apple and then I got my foot caught in the pedal. The rain reduced my coefficient of friction and I skidded to a halt along the right side of my body. Luckily there was a crash recovery team right there.
What is your happiest moment of the trip? Hmm. They're all so mediocrely happy that I just can't define one clear happiest moment.
Do you like the cows?I like the cows when they appear on a piece of bread. Otherwise there are many other pretty cows and some ill-cut pastures. I like looking at the cows. I like smelling the cows and what they eat, but I don't necessarily like the cows.
So... are you having fun? Yes, I am. Like my shirt says, I am having fun.
