Day 10: August 2, 2001. Dijon to Tournus: 105 km

Elijah, Tanya and Javier by the hotel.

Today's webpage brought to you by Tanya Marsh

It was a dark and stormy night. As the rain fell, the unicyclists enjoyed the cozy comfort of their small hotel and looked back on their 100+ km day. Most riders left last night's hotel bright and early in hopes of putting on the km before the heat. However, it was one of the coolest days we've had so far, with cloud cover for most of the day. It even sprinkled and threatened to rain on us several times, but the weather held until the last of the riders trickled into the hotel. Today's warm fuzzy moments included vast fields of sunflowers, herds of cattle, circling hawks, and the wonderful view from our hotel of the raindrops falling on the river. A number of the riders took a fun little MUni trail detour trying to avoid the main highway, which is discussed further below. But now we would like to thank all of our friends and families for posting notes in the guestbook! We appreciate it very much.

Rider of the Day: Scot "Doctor/Mister" Cooper

Twenty some years ago, Scot took two years of high school French, and now he's putting it to good use (simply trying to get directions!) Today he got lost -- er, MISDIRECTED -- twice. One of those times was pretty interesting for this MUni man as he ended up on a rocky, gravely, muddy trail. Scot has been an avid MUni rider for 4 years, and says he enjoyed the backroad view. "It was a nice alternative to the main road. Part of the adventure is not being on the main road and still finding your way. We get to meet the locals!" Adventure of the day: stopped at a cafe, Scot met a little girl who had never seen a unicycle before. When Scot told her that he had ridden his uni from Dijon, she said, "Oo la la!" Scot has the "Unibago" of the group, the uni with it all. He has added an aerobar in addition to his extension, and rides with a loaded pack on the back "bumper." However, the brake on his uni has but one purpose: a parking brake. Scot chooses not to brake down hills. He jokes that he's considering adding an umbrella to shade himself from the sun. :) Despite the long hours of riding that don't allow much sightseeing time, Scot said, "I'm having a lot of fun. It's a great way to see Europe."
Little-known Fact: He is the proud "inventor" of the first MUni giraffe
Average speed: 10.2 mph -- Scot has one of the most consistent speeds in the group
Does he moo at the cows as he goes past? "Yeah, I moo and I say 'Bonjour!' and 'What are you staring at?'"

Scot's Advice for the Day

"Buy a good French dictionary."
