Background and Analysis
European Unicycle Tour
July 24 to August 14, 2001

Background
The Riders on EUT took four surveys in order to help people plan for future rides. While some of the questions help give some background on the riders, one of the major purposes of the surveys was to help correlate the quality and quantity training with how well the rider did on the tour. The support crew (Connie and Dana) answered the last two surveys from their perspective.

Survey Detail
The riders of the tour were given four surveys at the following times:
1. Survey #1 – One month before the ride started
2. Survey #2 – The day before the ride started
3. Survey #3 – Day after the ride ended
4. Survey #4 – Two months after the ride was finished

Analysis of results by Andy
While the surveys ask a lot of interesting questions, one purpose of the surveys was measure the correlation between training and how well the rider did on the tour.

Six riders rode the entire distance. Since one rider only missed 30 km of the entire tour, that rider will be considered to have ridden the whole ride. Of these six riders, three of them had trained a lot and were really prepared for the tour. The other three were moderately ready and during the first four days had a harder time adjusting to the amount of riding. But once their bodies got used to the riding, they did just as well as riders who trained extensively.

The remaining four riders who didn’t ride the entire way, one had trained extensively while the other three had trained moderately.

Conclusion on training: While training will help increase the odds of having a succesfull ride, it is only one part. For riders that don’t train extensively, their first couple days will be harder until their bodies adjust to the physical activity.
